Wonder Woman Trailer Review | SDCC WEEK

Time to talk about the official Wonder Woman Trailer. SWEET LORD WHERE DOES ONE BEGIN? After all the hype from Batman vs Superman and the recent release of the new Justice League trailer, there are high expectations of the upcoming film which is due for release in 2017. It will be interesting to see what the director, Patty Jenkins, has come up with in bringing us the story of Wonder Woman’s origins.  Starring the amazing Gal Gadot whose previous career in the Israeli army certainly granted her the skill set to gracefully smash any action roles with her own stunts. So there is no surprise that Gadot is ideal for the part of playing the Amazonian princess Diana; after all, she is practically the real deal.

The costume has to be one of the best things about the new Wonder Woman. If you were/are a fan of Xena the Warrior Princess like I was, you will definitely appreciate the revamped dark leather armour suit. Not to mention that gorgeous blue dress Diana wears, where the sword looks a part of the dress (GENIUS!). I swear these are the BAMF goals that everyone needs to strive for.  And of course Wonder Woman can’t be Wonder Woman without her golden lasso and shield. Seriously, hats off to the costume department for managing to recreate those Amazonian/Greek mythology vibes while maintaining the Hero we all know and recognise.

The time period of the origin piece is rather interesting and while the war during which the film takes place is not established, rumours have stated it was either during WWI or WWII. Nevertheless, the ancient scenery from Diana’s Mediterranean home, contrasted with the latter parts of the film of her sparring in more modern war zones, definitely amplify the Hero’s otherworldly persona, and with such a wide timeline to work with there are so many possibilities for varying plot lines.

If scenes of bad ass warriors charging into the fray on horseback don’t cause you to have major feelings of going off and joining the Amazonians, then go sit in a corner and surround yourself in a bubble of reality. Pair that with an epic soundtrack and this movie is expected to become another hit of the DC franchise.  Here’s the new trailer to enjoy for yourself! J

POOL, Dead. (SPOILER WARNING)

Just as I was beginning to think that the contemporary action films being released in the recent past were becoming repetitive and unoriginal, the release of Deadpool restored my faith in the ability to produce an unconventional and innovative film. With an incredibly refreshing anti-hero, fascinating non-linear structure explored through said anti-hero’s direct narration and an exceedingly witty screenplay laden with pop-culture references, Deadpool is nothing less than an energetic and entertaining film which exceeded many an expectation.

From the previews, I had anticipated nothing less than a snarky, quick-witted and hilariously crude Wade Wilson but, what I did not expect, was the sheer amount of genuine laughter that would emanate from the audience due to the often unexpected dialogue and consistent poignant references. For this, credit is undoubtedly due to the writers for a cohesive script and the creation of a rogue character who continuously kept the audience guessing.

From the moment the opening titles began to run, crediting lead actor, Ryan Reynolds as “God’s perfect idiot”, and director Tim Miller as “an overpaid tool”, the audience was drawn into the comedic aura that underlies the entire film.

A far cry from Marvel’s previous films, Deadpool follows the story of the mercenary, Wade Wilson who was initially introduced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine with his mouth sewn shut. He initiates a plot for revenge against the cunning and deceptive Ajax played by Ed Skrein and his formidable muscle, Angel Dust, played by Gina Carano.

Reynolds does a magnificent job in bringing to life the rowdy Wade who, when diagnosed with terminal cancer, seeks the assistance of a private organisation to save his life. Heading the procedure is Ajax, who utilises an abundance of torture techniques in an attempt to trigger Wade's dormant mutant genes, inevitably providing him with his superhuman abilities. During the process, Wade is horrifically and permanently disfigured, initiating his search for vengeance and desire to find Ajax in order to rectify the damage so that he might resume his life with his girlfriend, Vanessa, played by the stunning Morena Baccarin.

Despite the counter-culture notion of a film with an anti-hero as the protagonist, Wade himself claims that the film is yet another “love story”. Nevertheless, I was glad to see that the plot was not wholly overridden by the novelty of a stereotypical romance between a hero and a damsel.

I also immensely enjoyed the way in which producers attempted to include the audience through Wade’s narration and found that it was executed in such a way that was incredibly skilful and effective in eliciting the audience’s active engagement.

The only X-Men depicted in the film are Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, portrayed by Stefan Kapicic and Brianna Hildebrand respectively. Despite Wade's claims that the "studio couldn't afford" more X-Men, the two held their own and provided both humour and characteristics which were a pleasant balance to Wade’s overly crude and eccentric demeanour.

While I was initially apprehensive about the film’s intended departure from Deadpool’s story as it was introduced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, ultimately I was immensely satisfied with the film which I inevitably saw no less than three times since its Australian release. I cannot wait to see what is to come in the sequel, although I hope the studio will not be so stringent this time round (Wade’s words not mine!) and include more X-Men.

In the meantime, leave a comment about what you thought of the film or what you would love to see in the next Deadpool one.

Everything you need to know to prepare yourself for Assassin's Creed!

The film adaptation of the much loved video-game franchise, Assassin’s Creed, will be released this year in December, 2016. While the film will not incorporate the lead characters’ stories from the games, it setting in 15th century Spain reflects its aim to explore unchartered territory with filming taking place in the beautiful, historical landscape of Malta. So far the games have been set in the Middle East, Italy, North America, the Caribbean, France and, most recently, in London. Therefore it it is probably best that the film is taken away from these previous locations as gamers would likely prefer to avoid a retelling of the stories that they have already explored in the game while non-gamers would not need to have much background and context to enjoy the film. Notable actors such as Michael Fassbender, best known for his roles in X-Men and Inglorious Bastard, will be playing the lead character, Callum Lynch, who discovers that he is the descendent of a 15th century Master Assassin named Aguilar.

Through the use of groundbreaking technology, the Animus device, Callum becomes genetically linked with his assassin ancestor and is enabled to encompass Aguilar’s memories and skills in order to combat the ongoing oppressive Templar organization of the modern world. In other words, the well known plotline of Assassin’s versus Templars will remain to be a key part of the storyline as well as the use of genetic memories to link the present to the past. Other prominent actors will appear in the film though their characters have not yet been disclosed. They include Jeremy Irons, known for Man in the Iron Mask and The Lion King, Marion Cotillard, who appears in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception, as well as Brendon Gleeson, best known for Harry Potter, Troy and Braveheart.

While I am super keen and excited to see how the adaptation is going to pan out, it is probably best to not put overly high expectations on the film, as there are two possible outcomes we can expect… a big hit or an utter flop. For the sake of the Creed let us hope that it is a big hit! We can sometimes be too critical of spin off films, especially when they attempt to create a world with which we are already so familiar and that we love so well, because often both crucial and minor elements of the storyline is left out in order to fit everything within a two-hour time frame. Nonetheless I don’t think anyone expected an Assassin’s Creed film to become an idea, let alone a reality produced with a leading cast. Either way we can be grateful that we get to see Fassbender in some pretty rockin’ assassin gear!

Star Wars Sydney Fan Event ~ Harrison Ford Visit!

Fellow Jedi, Siths and Droids!

There are only a few more hours left until we can all be transported to a galaxy far, far away! Some of our Speak 4 Geeks Team were lucky enough to attend the Star Wars Sydney Fan Event with a special visit by a certain scoundrel who is the captain of the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.

The day began with thousands upon thousands of fans bracing the burning Australian sun for hours to be one of the first to get inside the Sydney Opera House Forecourt. When the gates opened at 4pm fans raced in to get the best spots to catch all of the stage action!

Everyone's favourite scoundrel!

The event, which was hosted by Jay Laga’aia (Captain Typho - Star Wars Prequels), began with a fan trivia event, in which 8 lucky fans were required to use the force and test their Star Wars knowledge. Each participant won an amazing prize packs ranging from a Lego Millennium Falcon to a SFX Lightsaber! I guess the force was indeed strong with these young padawans!

Fan Trivia Event

We were then treated to two wonderful Q&As. The first was about the new Virtual Reality Google Cardboard that have teamed up with Star Wars and Optus to create the ‘Jakku Spy’ Adventure which you can try out using the Star Wars app. Some of us were lucky enough to get our hands on the limited edition Star Wars google cardboards and the experience is unlike anything we’ve experienced. We highly recommend that you find a way to get a Google Cardboard and follow BB-8 on his adventures on Jakku!

The second Q&A focused on Sphero’s creation of the BB-8 droid and the amazing process of creating this incredible technology. Whilst walking around the forecourt many BB-8 Sphero droids were just roaming around and interacting with fans! Sphero also brought along there only to-scale model of the droid complete with it’s quirky sounds.

Limited Edition Star Wars Google Cardboard

There were many other activities attendees could experience in the fan area like playing the new Battlefront, Disney Infinity with Star Wars figures, taking your photo with BB-8 and Rey as well as having your own green-screened photo!

However, the moment we had all been waiting so long for finally came! Harrison Ford had finally arrived and he surpassed my expectations of how amazing he actually is! There are no words to describe the feeling when you’re in the presence of a legend...the moment goes so fast but each second was incredibly special. He then went onstage for a wonderful Q&A which we will let you watch below.

The night ended with the trailer being shown once more! The whole is experience was something we will never forget. Being surrounded by so many fans that are as passionate as you are truly makes you realise how special and lucky it feels to be a part of events such as these.

If you were at the event let us know what your favourite part was? If you are seeing the movie in a few hours, what are you most excited to see?

As always, May the Force be with you!

In a Galaxy Far, Far Away… | Star Wars Update

Fellow Jedis and Siths!!!

The day is almost upon us…only 23 sleeps to go! Exciting things have been happening all around us and we are here to give you the highlight run down.

First of all, the Covergirl Star Wars make up range hit our stores and I managed to pick up some pieces. The full range included 6 lipsticks, 10 mascaras and 3 nail polishes that are all limited edition, so if you haven’t had a chance to get your hands on some yet I suggest you hurry.

The two lipsticks I picked up were #70 Nude and #40 Gold. The lipsticks go on quite smoothly and almost have a lip-balmly feel to them. The #40 lipstick has more glitter flecks in the product that you can feel when you put it on, so if that’s something that annoys you I suggest you steer away from this colour. All the lipstick tubes are glitter products but what else do you expect for an outer space vibe! Personally, I feel they could’ve name the products after Star Wars characters, places or things, so I have decided from now on that I will be calling #40 ‘Tatooine Suns’ and #70 ‘Naboo’s Princess’. Tell us what you believe the other lipstick names should be?

As for the mascara, there are ten different sayings to choose from! I purchased a Dark Side mascara that has the quote “Indeed you are powerful!” To be honest the mascara isn’t actually that great for me. For someone that has long lashes is just clumps everything together and makes a mess. It works a lot better for my bottom lashes as the wand is extremely short. As for the nail polish I actually haven't spotted any here in Australia so I'm not sure whether it's actually being sold here...if anyone finds some let us know!

Amongst other news, the new Star Wars Battlefront game was released on the 17th of November. It took the top spot for the biggest launch of a Star Wars franchise game as well as being the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 game online. Although we haven’t got our hands on the game yet, the general gameplay looks quite good from what I’ve experienced in the demo. Personally I found the first Battlefront quite good in the way you could set up multiplayer gameplay and missions easily so I hope they have managed to keep that simplicity. If any of you have had the chance to play it yet we would love to know your thoughts.

On the 22nd of November, Pentatonix, accompanied by full symphony orchestra, treated us to a special Star Wars music tribute at the American Music Awards. It absolutely blew my mind with its expertly arranged medley and incredibly pieced outfits plus stunning vocals all set amongst a video montage backdrop from the original trilogy. Our favourite Captain of the Millennium Falcon, Harrison Ford, introduced the segment along with a newly released scene from the film especially for the awards show.

Finally, Jimmy Kimmel hosted a Star Wars special episode where there were interviews with old and new casted members, director J.J. Abrams, hilarious games and a very touching make up between Han Solo and Chewbacca. We found out that the first word spoken in the movie is ‘This’ and heard some amazing behind the scene stories.  You can check out all the highlights from the episode on the JimmyKimmel Youtube Channel.

All I can say is that the 17th of December could not come sooner!

May the Force be with you!

The Huntsman: Winter's War | Poster and Teaser Reveal

Hello Geeks,

When there was news on Snow White and The Huntsman (2012) getting a stand-alone Huntsman movie, well, I was thrilled. Who doesn’t want to see more of Chris Hemsworth with a Scottish accent? Well, today, we got the first glimpse of the goodness to come in 2016. That’s right, a teaser trailer and first look posters have been released for the up and coming movie, The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016).

It will be quite refreshing to witness an epic battle movie dominated by a female cast, as new members, Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt, join the already spectacular cast.

We have Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, putting on a wicked voice is dubbed over the teaser trailer, which ends it with her enchanting, devilish laugh. Honestly, it sends chills, which just gets you more excited. We don’t get much else from the trailer other than a few short shots of the new characters and some old faces, but it still gets you pumped for the longer trailer, which is due for release soon. The 16-second clip definitely got me pumped for what’s to come, especially with badass women leading the front. I mean, I’m all for the beautiful Mr Hemsworth kicking some butt, but god, do I love to see women kicking-ass and taking names. So, for Jessica Chastain to be in this and with seconds of footage that already show her being epic, I am truly excited.

Chris Hemsworth is The Huntsman

Emily Blunt seems in her rightful place as an epic queen, and though the Ice Queen seems fierce and, well, beautiful as all hell, I can honestly say, Blunt is going to bring her A-game for this movie.

Emily Blunt is The Ice Queen

We have the first four posters of the main cast for the film, including the members from the first film, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. Although we won’t be seeing Kristen Stewart return for this film, it is still exciting to have some new blood mixed in with the old.

Charlize Theron is The Evil Queen

The posters themselves aren’t much; a little too Photoshop happy on the designers part, in my opinion, but it’s still feels rich in the original films light. We still have the elegance and threatening nature of the Evil Queen and the mysterious and fighting-ready attitude of the Huntsman. I expect that this movie will be gritty and beautiful, dark and light all in one, it’s says ‘You can’t have beauty without the darkness’, that is the magic of Snow White and it’s coming movie.

Jessica Chastain is The Warrior

Though, it’s too early and with only a brief teaser to say, this could be a brilliant movie with some awesome battle sequences that will have my action heart singing for days. I have hopes for this movie and it’s gritty attitude. It may be an acquired taste for some, considering how the first movie fared, but it will surely bring people to the table with just a single teaser we’re given. When the full trailer is released, we’ll have an update on how we here, at Speak 4 Geeks Universe, feel about it, but I feel strongly enough to say that we will be more pumped up than ever before.

For now, enjoy the teaser, re-watch Snow White and The Huntsman and get excited for future trailers to come!
