Comic-Con Madness!

Hey Everyone,

So it's been a few weeks since Comic-Con finished and it’s once again that time of the year when all fandoms combine to see which surprises lie in store for the year ahead. Whilst we couldn’t be there, I thought it would be good to share some show-stoppers, just to update you if you haven’t seen it. (Diagnosis: you may be a Hobbit and need to get out of the Shire a bit more!)

1. Star Wars Episode VII

There is no going past what was undoubtedly my favourite panel from the whole weekend. If there was anyone I would trust (other than George Lucas of course) to continue the Star Wars Universe, it would be J.J. Abrams hands down! From what we’ve seen so far and what we’ve heard it looks like Episode VII is looking pretty epic. Personally, it makes me so happy to know that the franchise has a director that is truly taking into account what he already has to work with in order to continue the story rather than try to completely re-invent every part of Star Wars. It was hard not to get emotional when you saw the original cast back in costume during the reel they released at Comic-Con. Seeing Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford at the panel itself, recalling stories and discussing their thoughts on this legacy, was truly something special to experience. If the incredible panel wasn’t enough, Abbrams also organised a special Star Wars concert to which the entirety of Hall H were invited to attend, complete with a Stormtrooper chaperone!

2. DC Universe

So I thought I would put both Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman as one ranking because there is so much from SDCC to talk about. We were gifted with two incredibly awesome trailers from the DC Universe and I couldn’t be more excited. Personally I think I’m slightly more excited for Suicide Squad because there are so many characters we have never seen make a film appearance, particularly Harley Quinn!!!!!!! As she is one of my favourite Batman villains, we at Speak 4 Geeks would like to know your reactions/opinions to how any of the characters that were shown in the trailer are being portrayed thus far? To throw my 2 cents in, I personally enjoy the classic black/red Harley Quinn look where she and the Joker are slightly more comedic however in a movie like Suicide Squad I assume the more sadistic nature is a more appropriate path. That being said I do hope this isn’t the last time DC decides to put a rendition of Harley Quinn in one of their live-action films.

Switching over to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice…woah! Now look, the debate of the extent of how much power Superman should be allowed to have and use has always been an issue in the character’s portrayal however the trailer starts with a Man of Steel-esque feel and then switches to some Dark Knight-ish themes then throw in some Lex Luthor and Kryptonite and hey…I’m confused. The trailer seemed to show so many different storylines that I’m confused as to where Bruce Wayne is in the timeline of his Batman pursuit. Are we in Metropolis, Gotham or both? Is the main plot going to have an equal focus on both Batman and Superman? Now you might say, “That’s why you have to watch the film” but for a trailer, I feel it could’ve been slightly more concise and fluid still without giving away the movie. With confusion and the oddly shaped bat-signal aside, massive round of applause for Wonder Woman! Final seeing a super punch in action, I am extremely keen to see how Diana’s role as a strong female superhero will play into the unfolding of the storyline.

3. Sherlock

We have been waiting a painfully long time for Sherlock but it’s finally getting closer to being on our screens again. With the release of the sneak peek, true Sherlockians have had their Victorian-taste buds fulfilled with the new, yet traditional take to Season 4. I think we can all agree we are happy about Watson’s permanent moustache situation and I’m very excited to see if we are going to see some familiar faces we thought were not going to be visiting 221B in the near future!

4. Doctor Who

Capaldi! New Monsters! Electric Guitars! What’s not to love about the new trailer for Doctor Who Series 9! This season definitely looks a lot darker than Capaldi’s introductory series 8 which I am very excited to see. I really enjoy Capaldi’s take on the Doctor however, I am still not convinced of his partnering with Jenna Coleman (even though I love her character too). Hopefully with some female writers this season (yay!), her character will be explored in a more complex nature. We also had the exciting sneak peek of Maisie Williams at the very end! Who do you think her character is? The Doctor’s granddaughter? Another regeneration of River Song? Someone else entirely? Tell us your thoughts…

5.  Once Upon A Time

This one is on the top 5 list as a personal favourite. Although the Comic-Con promo was just a recap of everything we now so far with a Snow White voice over, we did get to see the new look of ‘Dark Swan’ and was introduced to the new fairy tale character for the season, Merida. In an interview with Jennifer Morrison, she described her new wardrobe as ‘very David Bowie-esque’ which she was very keen on. It will be interesting to see who is entrusted with the Dark One’s dagger (finger-crossed for Hook) and also how the new, improved Rumpelstiltskin is going to make his way around Storybrooke without the darkness.

So with all that being said, what were your favourite parts of Comic-Con? Let us know!
