Gaming Centre: Undertale

Greetings fellow geeks!

In the first ever Gaming Centre post, we will be discussing the most popular and “out there” indie game that has been catching the eye of fans and many well-known gamers from around the world.

Undertale, created by Toby Fox, was released on the 15th September 2015. It is a 2-bit RPG game that encompasses the mechanics of a traditional RPG game but with some differences. As a traditional RPG, it works through a turn-based combat system while incorporating a bullet-hell mechanism where the player’s “soul” (represented by a heart) must avoid the attacks released by the opponent. However, depending on the player, the player may choose to “fight” their opponent or find a different means of resolving the issue by choosing the “act” option. Whether the player chooses to do either one, their choice alone can alter the whole game in an instant and this is what makes this game so unique. Along with its style of gameplay, Toby Fox designed cute, weird and quirky characters that warms the player’s heart and basically ties in the true essence of the game and its story.

Toby Fox developed this game heavily outlining the morality between killing and sparing a monster when encountered. The relationships and dialogue between all characters in this game really emphasise this morality, making the game more complex than what it seems. The soundtrack of the game was also created by Toby Fox and really expresses a traditional RPG game, using different variations of tunes in a music box or retro video game vibe.

The main story of the game takes place in a world where both humans and monsters reside. At the beginning of the game (where the main story is explained through pixelated art work) it depicts a war that had occurred between the humans and monsters, where the humans ended victorious and with their victory, decided to seal the monsters to the “Underground” with a strong magical barrier. However in the year 201X, a number of years after the war, a human child climbs Mt. Ebbot seeking shelter from the rain. The human child discovers a large hole in the mountain and unfortunately falls into the hole while taking a closer look. The human child wakes up on a bed of yellow flowers and is now in the RUINS of the Underground, where the player’s journey begins.

This game is available for purchase and download on Steam for $9.99 and the soundtrack is also available at the same price, however together in a bundle, it is available at the price of $17.99. The demo is also available for download on the main website http://undertale.com/

I really encourage anyone who is able to play this game to give this game a try. The uniqueness of this game is both eye catching and interesting as there are different possibilities depending on how you play the game whilst at the same time pulling on your precious heartstrings and emotions. However, like most people, including myself, do not have the heart to do what they call a “Genocide Run”. It is ultimately up to YOU as the player to determine the ending and fate of the characters in the game.

Happy gaming!
